This week our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday for has given us the prompt of Days of the Week. When we write about a song we can help it ENSKY (30 Day Vocabulary Challenge) to others. So I feel no shame posting on Song Lyric Sunday using Monday in the title.

My Song Lyric Sunday selection is Monday, Monday.

The song MONDAY, MONDAY was written in 1966. It’s about the lousy feeling that comes with the end of the weekend and beginning of another workweek.

The songwriter was John Phillips. His song appeared on the Mama & Papas album called “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears”.

The Mama & Papas consisted of John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliott, and Denny Doherty. The song MONDAY, MONDAY won a Grammy in 1966 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The original cover (shown above) features the group in a bathroom, sitting in a bathtub with a toilet in the corner. These LP were pulled from stores after the toilet was declared indecent and of course that makes them more collectible.

John Phillips was considered the leader of the group. Using the word leader when you consider all the drama that the Mama & Papas encountered might not be the correct descriptor for Phillips. One of the issues with the group was Cass Elliott’s weigh. She fought body shaming her entire career. I found it cruel even back in the 1960’s when the song Creeque Alley mocked her weight with lyrics like:

McGuinn and McGuire just a gettin’ higher
In L.A., you know where that’s at
And no one’s gettin’ fat except Mama Cass

MONDAY, MONDAY was the first Hot 100 chart-topper with a day in the week in the title, and the only one with “Monday”. In addition this was the first #1 US hit by a group comprised of at least two men and two women.
