Our host Jim Adams for Song Lyric Sunday has given us the prompt of Breakfast, Brunch, Dinner, Lunch, Snack, Supper
Take some time to read the posts of other bloggers who respond to this music challenge, and even better, read as many of them as you are able to as you will probably find many enjoyable songs and it is quite possibly that you will learn a thing or two. Also feel free to offer up your suggestion to this week’s prompt.
Here are the “rules”:
• Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it contains the prompt words or not. If it does not meet the criteria, then please explain why you chose this song.
• Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be.
• Make sure you also credit the singer/band and if you desire you can provide a link to where you found the lyrics.
• Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song.
• Ping back to this post or place your link in the comments section below.
• Read at least one other person’s blog, so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process.
• Feel free to suggest future prompts.
• Have fun and enjoy the music.
This past week I have been traveling on a combination of business and pleasure. Our stops have included Atlanta GA, Florence AL, Oxford MS, and Memphis TN. On Friday we decided to have dinner in an iconic Memphis restaurant called Charlie Vergos Rendezvous most often just referred to as The Rendezvous
I first heard of the restaurant in a song called “Let’s Go To Memphis In The Meantime” performed by John Hiatt. The song was part of a 1987 album called “Bring The Family” which many critics claim is his best work.
The song I selected has one lyric in that meets today prompt and since I was leaving Memphis today I wanted to include it. I stand ready to be criticized for all the great songs recorded in Memphis but I just love this song. It tells a great story rife with satire about a Nashville couple who just need a change of scenery and music. Having been to both Nashville and Memphis I must say John Hiatt captures the music differences between the two locations.
The lyrics to the song go like this
I got something to say little girl
You might not like my style
But we’ve been hanging around this town
Just a little too long a while
You say you’re gonna get your act together
Gonna take it out on the road
But if I don’t get outta here pretty soon
My head’s going to explodeSure
I like country music
I like mandolins
But right now I need a telecaster
Through a vibro-lux turned up to ten
Lets go to Memphis in the meantime baby
Memphis in the meantime girlI need a little shot of that rhythm baby
Mixed up with these country blues
I want to trade in these ol country boots
For some fine italian shoes
Forget the mousse and the hairspray sugar
We don’t need none of that
Just a little dab’ll do ya girl
Underneath a pork pie hat
Until hell freezes over
Maybe you can wait that long
But I don’t think Ronnie Milsap’s gonna ever
Record this song
Lets go to Memphis in the meantime baby
Memphis in the meantime girl
Lets go to Memphis in the meantime baby
Memphis in the meantime girl
Maybe there’s nothin’ happenin’ there
Maybe there’s somethin’ in the air
Before our upper lips get stiff
Maybe we need us a big ol whiff
If we could just get off-a that beat little girl
Maybe we could find the groove
At least we can get a decent meal
Down at the Rendez-vous
‘Cause one more heartfelt steel guitar chord
Girl, it’s gonna do me in
I need to hear some trumpet and saxophone
You know sound as sweet as sin
And after we get good and greasy
Baby we can come back home
Put the cowhorns back on the cadillac
And change the message on the cord-a-phone
But…Lets go to Memphis in the meantime baby
Memphis in the meantime girl
Here is a video I will leave you with. The song was recorded in Hamburg Germany back in 1987. The intro is long so fast forward to the 1:00 mark.
I hope you get to Memphis one day. If you go get a great meal down at The Rendezvous.
I like John Hiatt. Thanks for thinking of him for this prompt! ☺️
