The sense of smell is fascinating.

One of our five senses

A recent study said humans may be able to detect 1 Trillion SECENTS.

When we detect a SCENT with our nose what we are actually encountering are Esters. Esters are organic molecules that give off the smell. Our noses are equipped with some 400 olfactory sensors. Our eye has just three.

Odorant molecules stimulate sensory nerve cells (neurons) at the top of the nasal cavity and these respond by sending impulses to the brain.

To many of us SCENT is not just a smell but a reminder of an experience or a memory. SCENTS are connected to past events.

Found an article on 11 SCENTS that can elevate your mood or well-being. Here is that link.

Some of the SCENTS in the article include lavender, cinammon, vanilla, and citrus fruits. It also highlights the effect of each smell on the body.

Many of these have been produced thru synthetic production but a few have stymied chemists including the fragrance of jasmine. Producing the essential oil of Jasminum goes thru  an exhaustive process. Its distinct and seductive scent is most distinguished at night, the flowers are gathered at this time. The flowers are then placed in a layer of fat for extraction of the oil.

The sense of smell and the SCENTS we experience might be underappreciated. To use an old cliche’ “Stop and Smell the Roses” everyday.
