#Plates April 28

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

In March we purchased a previously owned vehicle which required us to get new License PLATES.

On Monday the State of NC retired my old standard license PLATE and issued me a new one. The photo below is an example of a standard license. The newer PLATES no longer require the red month decal in upper left.

In North Carolina it is possible to get a special or vanity license PLATE. Almost all states have this option and neighboring Virginia seems to many residents choosing that option. There are a lot of cars in North Carolina with these customized PLATES also. In North Carolina a car only has a plate on the rear of the vehicle.

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles issues specialty license plates that feature designs representing more than 100 causes and interest groups. Fees vary depending on the design an individual chooses and are in addition to standard vehicle registration fees.

One of the dilemmas with vanity is it sometimes what is deemed fashionable looses interest. The NC DMV has a list of vanity PLATES that they no longer offer. Was really intrigued to see PLATES for the Charlotte Checkers, Jaycees, and Boy Scouts of America on the phased out list.

Any organization wanting to establish a special registration plate must have its request approved by the N.C. General Assembly and take other steps before the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles can begin issuing the plate. There is a link on the NC DMV website that explains the process.

If you want to see the list of all the special plates you can go here. For colleges you click on the collegiate link.
