Today is the last post in the 30-Day State Trivia Coach4aday Challenge. I have enjoyed getting to know more about Wyoming. When your total state population is about the same as Omaha Nebraska it is hard to achieve notoriety on the world stage. When it comes to OLYMPIANS the state has has a small list.
There have been 7 Wyoming born individuals that have participated in the Olympics. Only one has won a Gold Medal.
Wyoming Born Olympic Participants
Since 1932 Wyoming athletes have earned four Olympic medals; one gold, two silver, and a bronze. Wrestling, Track and Field, and Rowing are the events that medals have been awarded.
1. At the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, Ned Turner placed fifth in the 800 metres
2. Rink Babka competed in the 1960 games, earning a silver medal in the Discus Throw.
3. Lance Deal competed in the Hammer Throw in four Olympic Games in 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2000. He took the silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta games
4. Rulon Gardner medaled in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. earning gold in 2000 and bronze in 2004.
5. David Zuniga came in 10th in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1996 Olympics
6. Jennifer Corbet competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the woman’ Coxed Fours rowing, placing fifth
7. Monica Michini rowed in the eight at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, placing 4th, and the single sculls at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finishing in 12th position.
Great Olympic Upsets Rulon vs. “The Russian Bear”
Rulon Gardner was a dairy farmer from Wyoming who in 2000 pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Olympic History. He won the Greco-Roman Wrestling title against Aleksandr Karelin. Coming into the 2000 Olympics Karelin had won the gold in 1988-1992-1996.
