During the month of July, I have taken up the 30-Day Curiosity Coach4aday Challenge, and today’s focus is on a NIBLICK.

The mechanics of this challenge involve presenting a question and subsequently uncovering the optimal response.

July 11th Curiosity Question

In golf what does the term NIBLICK refer to?

My late Uncle Jack Bourke was married to my mom’s sister and lived in Far Hills NJ was a saddler and worked for Beval Saddlery in Gladstone NJ. He worked with all types of products that contained or used leather.

He once gave my brother and I some golf clubs that he was asked to put new leather grips on back in the 1960’s. The customer never came back to pay for them, so he gifted them to us. All of those clubs were hickory shaft with leather grips.

One club in particular always intrigued me and it was called a NIBLICK.

July 11th Answer

In golf, the term “niblick” refers to an old-fashioned golf club that was used for short approach shots and chipping around the green. The niblick is an obsolete club and is not commonly used in modern golf.

Beginning in the later 1800s, niblicks started to more closely resemble – in appearance, not just use – today’s 9-irons and wedges.

Going back a couple of centuries you realize that golf clubs had different names. Great link to learn about names of golf clubs including Mashies-Niblicks and Spoons.
