As part of the 30-Day Curiosity Coach4aday Challenge in July, I’ve dedicated today’s focus to discover North Carolina’s Oldest BRIDGE

The mechanics of this challenge involve presenting a question and subsequently uncovering the optimal response.

July 10th Curiosity Question

What is the oldest bridge in North Carolina?

Bridges are among the most common and utilitarian structures found in modern society. Over the years the building materials have evolved which means the life span is growing longer and longer. In 2005 a report was completed called North Carolina Historic Bridge Inventory. Its goal was to survey more than 5,000 bridges erected from the 1890s to 1961 on the NC highway system.

July 10th Answer

It appears that many sources say The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge located in Claremont, Catawba County, North Carolina is the state’s oldest. It was built with Haupt Trusses.

Here are some other facts about this structure.

  1. Historic Significance: The Bunker Hill Covered Bridge is a historic wooden covered bridge that was built in 1895. It is one of only two remaining original covered bridges in North Carolina.
  2. Length and Structure: The bridge spans 85 feet across Lyle Creek and is supported by multiple timber trusses. It is a single-lane bridge with a wooden deck.
  3. Rehabilitation: In 2012, the Bunker Hill Covered Bridge underwent a significant rehabilitation and restoration project to preserve its historic integrity and ensure its structural stability. The project included repairs to the trusses, replacement of the roof, and improvements to the bridge’s overall condition.
