For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is MIKE COX.

Early this week I read that Mike Cox MS,-PA-C joined Carolina Acute Care and Wellness Center in Lumberton NC. That business is located about a half-mile from my home.

Mike has also been an inspiration story to me because he took a leap of faith when it came to his career. He is a continual learner, and that designation makes him a leader.

Rules of the Challenge

Organizing and participating in the 30-Day Shout Coach4aday Challenge is very simple. Below are the steps.

Here is how to participate.

  1. Identify who gets the daily Shout-Out and make sure they know you are recognizing them.
  2. Describe why you giving them a Shout-Out-what are they doing that is notable?
  3. Do this daily for 30 Days posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

If you need ideas on how to give someone a daily shout-out here is a link on LinkedIn with some ideas that are good for the workplace.

March 21st-Mike Cox

If you live in Lumberton, NC you might recognize the name Mike Cox as the former Fire Chief from the Lumberton Fire Department. In 2010 Mike embarked on transforming his career after retiring from the Fire Department after 26 years.

Shortly before retiring he did some analysis and realized that he already had the minimum requirements needed to begin physician assistant training. Upon acceptance at the New York Institute of Technology Mike packed his bags and headed to New York to become a Physician Assistant.

Mike graduated from Lumberton High School and joined the U.S. Navy immediately after high school. Upon discharge in 1984 he joined the Lumberton Fire Department, where he worked for 26 years, climbing the ranks from fireman recruit to fire chief. Along the way he earned an associate degree from Fayetteville Technical College in Emergency Medical Science and a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University in Emergency Medical Care.

Mike had a great career as a fire fighter, but he is one of those leaders that wasn’t ready to stop growing so he found a new calling in medicine. When people make significant career changes in their 50’s I call them “special leaders” and they deserve a shout-out!

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
