Today’s contribution to the 30-Day Musical Instrument Coach4aday Challenge is on the MARACAS.

Many people including me might classify the sound of the Maracas to be the exclusive domain of Latin music.

When you attempt to provide a simple definition for this instrument a musical rattle is pretty succinct. Maracas are typically played as a pair and make noise by being shaken forward and backwards.

Professional percussionists seem to gravitate purchasing theirs from Meinl.

Sounds

Here is a quick video that lets you enjoy the sounds that they make and how to play them.

Favorite Song Featuring Maracas

There is a Rolling Stones song titled “Symphony for the Devil” that definitely has a Samba rhythm to it. If you look at the first minute of the song you can catch glimpses of the Maracas.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
