For January 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day 6 Degrees of Separation Challenge”-today we learn about some LES ROBINSON connections.

If you are a fan of college basketball especially the ACC the name Les Robinson may sound familiar to you.

Les Robinson had a notable career as a basketball coach, marked by his contributions to various teams. He served as the head coach for the North Carolina State University men’s basketball team from 1990 to 1996. He also was the Head Coach for East Tennessee and The Citadel.

Les was inducted into The Citadel Hall of Fame in 2012.

Rules of the Challenge

Many people have heard of this concept. The notion of six degrees of separation grew out of work conducted by the social psychologist Stanley Milgram in the 1960s. It then became a 1993 film named appropriately “Six Degrees of Separation.”

Organizing a six degrees of separation challenge involves creating a chain of people, each connected to the next by a mutual acquaintance. The goal is to demonstrate that any two people in the world can be connected through a chain of six or fewer personal connections.

How to Participate

Here is how to participate:

  1. Identify the First and Last Person in the Chain.
  2. Go thru the connections with a brief explanation.
  3. Do this daily for 30 Days posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 3-Les Robinson to Bo Jackson

Four Degrees of Separation-Les Robinson-Butch Estes-Pat Dye-Bo Jackson

  1. Les Robinson was the Head Basketball Coach at The Citadel and worked with Butch Estes during his tenure.
  2. Butch Estes in 1974 went to work at East Carolina University as an Assistant Basketball Coach and was in the same Athletic Department as ECU Head Football Coach Pat Dye. Butch today is the Head Basketball Coach at Barry University.
  3. Pat Dye coached at East Carolina for 6 seasons (1974-1980) and left to coach at Wyoming for 1 year before arriving at Auburn in 1981. I actually had him for a course at East Carolina. At Auburn in 1982 he recruited and coached Bo Jackson.
  4. Bo Jackson-graduated from high school in 1982 and had to make a choice. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the MLB draft by the NY Yankees and was a coveted football recruit. He signed with Auburn who promised him he could do both.

If you have time watch the ESPN 30-for 30 Episode called “You Don’t Know Bo

Think about posting your own 6 Degrees of Separation story. Love to read it.
