Technology has changed our lives. Today I will experience that when I have surgery performed on me using a LASER.

LASER surgery is a type of medical procedure that uses special light beams instead of instruments. Today I undergo my second cataract eye surgery. Last week’s appointment really got me curious about how effective and painless the LASER was.

Facts about Laser Surgery

First, I never knew LASER was actually a acronym and it stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Second, laser light, on the other hand, has a specific wavelength. It is focused in a narrow beam and creates a very high-intensity light. Because lasers can focus very accurately on tiny areas, they can be used for very precise surgical work or for cutting through tissue (in place of a scalpel).

Third, the advancement of LASERS has turned cataract surgery into a simple, non-invasive, outpatient procedure.

Fourth, LASERS are not just used for eye surgeries they are part of the following surgical procedures

  • Remove tumors
  • Help prevent blood loss by sealing small blood vessels
  • Seal lymph vessels to help decrease swelling and decrease the spread of tumor cells
  • Treat some skin conditions, including to remove or improve warts, moles, tattoos, birthmarks, scars, and wrinkles

Surgeons have to be highly skilled with a variety of tools and the LASER for many surgeons has proven to be one of the most important ones. We often bemoan technology but when it comes to certain types of medical procedures the LASER should be viewed as a positive.
