Last week America lost a great GENERAL. Colin Powell passed away on October 18th at the age of 84.

If you take time to read his bio you learn a lot about him as a leader. Often what comes up is he was the first African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State along with being the only person of color to serve on Joint Chiefs of Staff.

What makes Colin Powell life story so compelling is what he overcame to achieve leadership results. In addition to being a Four Star GENERAL he was also an author. Below are some of the books he authored.

I have read some of his books and one in particular gave me a great set of Leadership Lessons or Rules for Life. The book My American Journey contained those 13 rules. One that has become stronger as I have matured is #7.

Colin Powell’s 13 Rules For Life

From the Book My American Journey by Colin Powell

Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. He was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. He did not let his environment dictate his future. That is a lesson we all need to be reminded of.
