For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Kr.

Kr is the symbol for Krypton.

Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Krypton.

Noble Gas: Krypton is one of the noble gases, meaning it is chemically inert and rarely forms compounds with other elements. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless under normal conditions. Like other noble gases, krypton is found in trace amounts in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Used in Lighting: Krypton is used in various types of lighting, including fluorescent bulbs, high-performance flashlights, and airport runway lights. It is also used in some types of photographic flashes, especially for high-speed photography, as krypton-filled bulbs can produce a very bright, white light.

Rare in the Atmosphere: Krypton makes up only about 1 part per million of the Earth’s atmosphere by volume, making it relatively rare. Despite its scarcity, krypton is extracted through the fractional distillation of liquefied air, along with other noble gases like neon and xenon.

Oe bonus tidbit. Kryptonite is a fictional substance from the Superman comic book universe.
