#Knot October 1

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Today begins a new 30 Day #Coach4adayChallenge. For October the challenge is to tie a different type of KNOT every day. Any type of KNOT will do and that includes Boating, Fishing, Climbing, Surgical and yes even Ties.

The idea for this challenge was inspired by a podcast I listened to two weeks ago. The name of the podcast is The Art of Manliness and the episode was titled “Rewild Your Life” The guest on that show was Micah Mortali and he discussed how over time humans have become more and more domesticated. One of the solution he proposed was engaging in hands on skills that were very important to our ancestors. Learning to tie KNOTS fits that description.

I have been engaged in a lot of mental or social challenges lately and wanted to try something physical or hands on.

Learning to tie KNOTS is a skill but if you don’t use it you will lose it.

One final reason for undertaking this over the next 30 days is I truly believe that it impacts our brains. I found a couple interesting articles on KNOTS and our brains.

30 Day Knot Tying Challenge

How does this 30 Day #Coach4aday Challenge work and what do you need. As we previous challenges participants should feel free to modify it to suit them. The most important aspect is to spend time each day learning, practicing, or successfully tying a KNOT. Personally my goal is to master at least 15 KNOTS this month. I will have to navigate that around cataract surgery on both eyes.

What you need

First off you will need some rope and the experts recommend using paracord. I found a link at my local Lowe’s on what sizes of rope they have available.

Second many of the KNOTS will require that you have something to tie it off to. You will need a metal ring, wooden dowel or handrail for those KNOTS.

It was suggested that having two different colors of paracord sometimes helps learning KNOTS that tie off two loose ends.

KNOTS have varying purposes some of the more common ones are found below:

There is a fabulous resource to help each of us with the KNOT Tying. I was able to locate a website called ANIMATED KNOTS that rally can help you learn step by step. They have a “KNOT of the Day Challenge” but I am going to start with their “New to Knots Section” and work my way forward.

Today it is very low hanging fruit and I am starting out with the overhand KNOT. Should take all of 15 seconds to do this one. Tomorrow it is the Half Hitch KNOT, Saturday is the Square Knot, and Sunday the Sheet Bend.

Hope you will consider joining the Challenge. Excited that Jeff Neelon and Jaclyn Donovan have already signed on.
