For March 2024 several of us will be participating in the “30-Day Shout-Out Coach4aday Challenge”. Today the recipient is JOE BUTLER.

Joe Butler grew up in Lumberton, lives in Lumberton, worked in Lumberton and now is retired in Lumberton. In many ways he is the face of our community in a number of different roles.

Before retiring, he dedicated the second half of his career to Southeastern Health, now known as UNC Health. Initially, he collaborated with Morris Bullock in physician recruitment, a task demanding tremendous energy, preparation, and enduring disappointment for those unfamiliar with it. Joe assumed the role of Lumberton’s ambassador to potential doctors and their families, excelling due to his unwavering belief in the institution and his diligent preparation.

Joe is also the face for fun and laughter with his friends. I can tell you that almost no event can occur without Joe getting a laugh out of a group by telling a story or referencing some character or line from a movie. His memory of lines from Animal House, Caddy Shack, and Blazing Saddles is encyclopedia like.

March 13th-Joe Butler’s Impact

Joe is one of those leaders that becomes the face for community service. When you narrow that down to activities related to supporting children in our community, he is on Mount Rushmore. He does this in a number of ways but especially through his involvement with the Kiwanis Club of Robeson/Lumberton.

Within Kiwanis you can count on Joe to cook pancakes, read books, take children to a college basketball games, participate in Read Across Robeson, tee it up in the golf tournament, sell sponsorships, invite new members to the club and of course predict with way too much frequency that he will win any type of door prize or raffle he is entered in.

My shoutout today goes to a man that loves Lumberton Joe Butler.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
