I am on a quest to sample, drink, or consume 1,000 unique beers in my life. This journey began in 2014. I am currently siting at 950 and track each new beer on Untapped. The pandemic has made getting out more of a challenge.

I have shared this goal with a number of people including Kevin Fraley and Annette Wallwork who as Lumberton NC restaurant owners are always on the lookout for a new beer. They are not the only ones who know about my interest. My across the street neighbors Jef and Dencie Lambdin brought me the June 2020 issue of Smithsonian Magazine.

That issue featured an article of interest to me on a man from New Jersey named Charlie Papazian. He is probably someone Zac Greene, Scott Billingsley, or Jeff Frederick might be familiar with. I had no idea who he was. He has been dubbed a lot of nicknames including HOME BREW Hero.

Charlie Papazian is the founder and past president of the Brewers Association. Papazian is one of the most prominent and recognized names in the world of beer and HOME BREWING. He is the author of an extremely popular book called “The Complete Joy of HOMEBREWING”

When that book was released Charlie became a cult figure and many people say the de facto leader of the craft beer movement in the United States. Charlie created the Great American Beer Festival which began in 1982 in Colorado.

Charlie moved to Colorado after he graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in nuclear engineering. When he arrived in Colorado the only brewery in the entire state was Coors. Today Colorado boast some 400 plus breweries.

The article was written by Matthew Shaer and you can read it at this link.

This YouTube video gives you a little flavor of his personality.

Maybe I might have to add some HOME BREWS to my list.
