For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Hg

Hg is the symbol for the element Mercury.

Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
  2. Share at least one fact about that element
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

September 2nd-Hg

Mercury is a chemical element with symbol Hg and atomic number 80. Classified as a transition metal, Mercury is a liquid at room temperature.

Here are some facts about Mercury

Mercury is the only metal that is a liquid at standard temperature and pressure.

Mercury is a very rare element in the Earth’s crust.

Mercury generally is not allowed on aircraft because it combines so readily with aluminum, a metal that is common on aircraft. When mercury forms an amalgam with aluminum, the oxide layer that protects aluminum from oxidizing is disrupted. This causes aluminum to corrode in much the same way as iron rusts.
