#Hawks September 17

Last Friday standing on the 5th tee of Pinecrest County Club. I saw a gigantic red tailed HAWK swoop in and land high in a tree to the left of the tee box.

The HAWK (picture below) watched each of us tee off high up on limb.

Hawk at Pinecrest Country Club Lumberton NC

I guess you could say he was watching us like a HAWK. On this particular day all the four tee shots found the fairway so his keen eyesight was not required to find lost balls.

I have also seen pairs of HAWKS flying over downtown Lumberton NC and of course perched in trees along the levee on the Lumber River between 5th St. and Luther Britt Park.

Red-tailed Hawks, like other birds of prey, have amazing eyesight. Not only can they see the colors that we can, but also colors in the ultraviolet range meaning they can see more colors than us. It is another example of the gifts nature provides each species.

Here are some other facts about red-tailed HAWKS behavior. They can be seen soaring above open fields looking for prey, sitting atop telephone poles looking for prey, or sitting on top of a long leaf pine at Pinecrest Country Club on a tree… yes, looking for prey.

Red Tailed HAKS stay in the same territory their entire lives, that territory is usually just about 2 square miles. That means I will be looking for my 5th tee box friend again each morning while on the golf course.
