It seems like many leaders strive for their business, institution, or agency to experience GROWTH. Growing can come in many forms but I have found the default definition always includes having more people.

Rapid GROWTH sometimes becomes an aspiration but it comes with challenges that even the best leaders may have never experienced. Here are some things to keep in mind if your situation is experiencing rapid GROWTH.

  1. Fight off the urge to have more RULES-Seth Godin says it best

As any organization hits a sufficient size, it will increase rules in order to decrease responsibility. Because they’ve gotten big enough that they no longer trust the people who work for them.

2. Peter Drucker before he died offered up this gem

“The founder has to learn to become the leader of a team rather than a ‘star’ with ‘helpers’. Build up your team; let them shine. You don’t need to be the one who has the best ideas or who gets the credit or plum assignments.”

3. From David Finkel

To sustainably grow you must personally produce less and get your business to produce more. Look for ways to do less for your business by getting other people on your team to produce more.

Finally you are doing something right and I would wager it the experience your end users are having. Don’t lose sight of that fact. If you are a university it is your students or donors, if you are a government agency it is the people you serve, and if you are a business it is your customers.

At the end of the day, these groups pay your bills and are the reason business is experiencing GROWTH. Keep them happy.
