For October 2023, I am participating in the “30-Day 30 Words Coach4aday Challenge” where the topic today is on GOOD.

October 11th Topic

Within a six-hour period earlier this month, I witnessed individuals performing acts of kindness for their community. Simultaneously, I encountered some who held negative views, portraying everyone as evil or simply bad.

John Tierney is a co-author who published a book titled “The Power of Bad: How the Negativity Effect Rules Us and How We Can Rule It”

In that book science confirms a bad bias is much stronger than a good one. Our minds are programmed to overreact to negative things in relation to positive observations. One example is when we encounter someone who does more than we expected. Our default setting doesn’t give that interaction a higher rating than someone doing just what is expected. On the other end of the spectrum failing to deliver emits all types of negative energy from us.

Mass media is aiming to attract a mass audience. They understand the best way to attract a large audience is to focus on that strong negative bias.

How to counter all this negativity might revolve around going on a “low bad diet”. One trend for some people is “News Sobriety” which I learned from Sam Corcos on a Tim Ferris Podcast.
