I have a friend that is a Physician’s Assistant, the wife of a college athletic director, servant leader, and a fantastic athlete. Her name is Windy Christy.
Earlier this week she sent me and others a fantastic article on ENTITLEMENT that is on a blog called Basketball is Psychology written by Julie Fournier. Her article is called the The ENTITLEMENT Cure
As a coach, teacher, or group leader I encounter individuals who have a toxic reality they should always come first, even at the expense of stepping on others.
One of the premises of the article is that ENTITLEMENT is a choice. I agree with that premise. It is a choice that produces a certain attitude about life or in this case being part of a basketball team. Her article in my mind is relative to all types of teams. If a team member,or heaven forbid the person who is suppose to be the leader has an ENTITLEMENT attitude, that team is doomed.
If you are looking for some of the warning signs of ENTITLEMENT check out this article by Aletheia Luna called 16 Signs You Have a Sense of ENTITLEMENT.
Julie’s article does a great job of outlining a four part cure for the attitude of ENTITLEMENT.
She also references a book called “Not Everyone Gets a Trophy” by Bruce Tulgan.
Here is a YouTube Video by the author Bruce Tulgan.
As a leader evaluate your team and determine if you need to confront an ENTITLEMENT issue. I recommend you give Julie’s article called The Entitlement Cure a read.
It might equip you as a leader with some tools to battle ENTITLEMENT on your team.
