Came across another fascinating author, college professor, and psychologist named Adam Grant. I got to listen to him talk for two hours on a podcast with Tim Ferris.

Adam talked about a lot of fascinating ideas and I am going to do future posts on what he taught me but today I will focus on just one. He talked about BRIGHT spots.

I first learned of this BRIGHT spot concept from Dan Heath in the book Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard

Most people, me included are blind to our weak spots. The opposite is also true, most of us are blind to our real strengths. The problem is many leaders focus too much on what is wrong versus what is working.

Adam Grant has a solution in finding our personal BRIGHT spots or what works for us.

Here is what he suggests. If you want to find your strengths and have $75.00 you can utilize Reflective Best Self Exercise. If you don’t have the cash you may attempt to replicate what Center for Positive Organizations (Ross School of Business, University of Michigan) does for paying clients.

The concept is to contact 15 to 20 people who know you well and ask them to tell a story about a time when you were at your best. You analyze the stories find the common themes and discover your BRIGHT spots.

Finding what triggers your personal BRIGHT spots is a way to increase your leadership impact.
