Living in the rural south there is no shortage of seeing buildings that are classified as a COUNTRY CHURCH. They exist all over the country including Texas where “Painted Churches” are a tourist attraction.
I am sure many people regardless of where they live have a favorite design or a special church setting.
Here is one located in Robeson County (NC) I always have enjoyed driving by. Ashpole Presbyterian Church was built between 1860 and 1865, and is a two-level, three bay by five bay, Greek Revival style frame church. It features an octagonal belfry with a concave cap roof that rests on a tall, square base. the church is located not too far from the NC/SC State Line on Ashpole Church Road in Rowland NC
Back in the fall I was researching some travel destinations and did some digging on a place in the Ozarks called Eureka Springs AR. One of the interesting things I discovered about Eureka is they have one of the most unique “COUNTRY CHURCHES” in the country. That place of worship is called Thorncrown Chapel.
Thorncrown Chapel
To really get a feel of what this place is like you have to see photos. Really encourage you to go this link to see what makes it so unique. The church is located on Highway 62 West just outside of Eureka Spring. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted.
Thorncrown Chapel was designed by world renowned architect E. Fay Jones.
The chapel rises 48 feet into the sky with over 6,000 square feet of glass and 425 windows. Its dimensions are 24 feet by 60 feet. Made with all organic materials the chapel was meant to fit its natural setting. Steel forming a diamond shaped pattern in its wooden trusses is the only exception. Native flagstone can be found on the floor surrounded with a rock wall which creates a oneness with the Ozark hillside.
Here is a YouTube Video of a COUNTRY CHURCH I want to visit one day.
Do you have a favorite COUNTRY Church?
