For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with an iconic character who lived in Cullowhee NC and was a fixture at Western Carolina University nicknamed COONY.

Sometimes the truth might get buried in stories told over and over again. That may be the case with a character who lived in Cullowhee NC and went by the nickname “Coony”. The stories about him were wild and he was a fixture at Clarence Pressley Barber Shop. Never knew his real name but it might Conrad Kelly Frady

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

July 16th-Coony

What made Coony infamous for any student attending WCU was his demeanor and mode of transportation. He rode everywhere in Cullowhee on a John Deer Riding Lawnmower. He also would ask parents if he could hold their baby and was not beyond telling girls they were pretty.

Here is a YouTube video from 1992 showing him driving that tractor.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
