Much of America’s progress in the west was due to the railroad and rail STATIONS. Yet things change and today you cannot board a passenger train anywhere in Wyoming.

The railroad played a major role in Wyoming becoming a territory and eventually a state. After the Civil War the quest for a transcontinental railroad became an obsession for America. The line reached Cheyenne late in 1867 and Evanston by the end of 1868. In May 1869, the Union Pacific met the east-building Central Pacific in Utah Territory at Promontory Point.

The railroad allowed new towns to prosper. New towns sprung up at regular intervals as a STATION was built. For Wyoming that meant important institutions like the state capital, state prison and state hospital all were located in towns with a railroad STATION.

Today there is not one single Amtrak Station in Wyoming. You can catch a bus in Wyoming that will take you to an out-of-state train STATION. There are still a number of surviving ones that have been repurposed.
