The next sentence might not sound flattering. I have not been to CHURCH since March 15, 2020.
Of course the pandemic has been the reason but yesterday my CHURCH met face to face for the first time in 7 months. I missed my First Presbyterian family and even though it was full of restrictions it was good to be back.
When any habit is involuntary stopped it makes you reflect. Attending CHURCH on a Sunday was a fundamental routine for me and many others. Getting to go back made all the emotions, connections, and memories of past Sundays stronger
I missed seeing the people, I missed the announcements, I missed the music, I missed the sermon, I missed seeing the children, and I missed thinking about what my family would do for breakfast/lunch after church. Gathering as a family at some point on Sunday is a ritual for us.
Isn’t it crazy that I missed going to CHURCH and my mind was wandering on what I would eat later that day. Going back to CHURCH let me discover that I need to do a better job of being in the moment. Yesterday I realized that going to CHURCH and Sunday dinner were important. I need to finish one before I think about the other.
Our pastor David Ruth has a great sense of humor.
To his credit he often weaves laughter in to his sermons. To my memory he has never been guilty of having the sermon going on to long. Yesterday he preached a wonderful message.
Yet I have friends who don’t attend my CHURCH that state long winded sermons often occur with their minister. I am sure there are signs a congregation may attempt to send a pontificating pastor but Lyle Lovett and His Large Band had a unique way.
I don’t know if David Ruth is going to like my post but I hope he at least appreciates Lyle Lovett creative communication skills thru a song. Better yet, I hope he appreciates that COVID restrictions over the past seven months made going to CHURCH special yesterday.
I am hijacking Lyle Lovett’s lyrics to the song CHURCH
I went to church yesterday
So I could reflect and pray
But something quite unusual
Happened on that day
To the Lord that praises me –
Its time for dinner lets go eat
Glad to listen to what the preacher said
