For the month of September 2024 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Periodic Elements Coach4aday Challenge. The concept is to show the symbol of one of the 118 elements and give a few facts about it. Today I have chosen Br.
Elements 30-Day Challenge Guidelines
Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.
- Each day in September 2024 show the symbol for one particular element.
- Share at least one fact about that element
- If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

Here are three facts about Bromine.
Only Liquid Nonmetal at Room Temperature: Bromine is unique as it is the only nonmetal that is a liquid at room temperature. It has a reddish-brown color and evaporates easily to form a dense, reddish vapor. Its liquid state makes it stand out among the halogens, which are usually gases like chlorine or solids like iodine.
Highly Reactive and Toxic: Bromine is highly reactive and corrosive. It can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system upon exposure. Due to its reactivity, bromine is used in various chemical reactions and compounds, including flame retardants, pesticides, and water treatment chemicals.
Found in Seawater and Salt Lakes: Bromine is relatively rare in the Earth’s crust but is more commonly found in seawater and salt lakes as bromide ions (Br⁻). It is extracted from brine pools and salt deposits. Bromine compounds are important in industry, particularly in producing fireproofing agents and certain pharmaceuticals.
