The Load Out

Jackson Browne wrote and recorded a song in 1977 that I wanted to profile this week called “The Load Out”. Yet, I cannot write about that song without including “Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Maurice Williams was from South Carolina.

I will start with “Stay” it was the shortest record at just 1:38 to ever reach the Top 100 Hits. It was a song that was on the charts in 1960.

The song also became popular with Franki Valli and the Four Seasons before Jackson Browne started pairing it with “The Load Out”.

The song “Stay” and “The Load Out” were the signature way Jackson Browne ended live performances. The song was a tribute to all the people that made a live show or appearance possible. That is my connection to today’s prompt.

Jackson Browne released an album in 1977 called “Running on Empty“. The ten songs on that album were recorded live in various settings. “The Load-Out” was recorded at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland during a show on August 27, 1977. The falsetto vocals on “Stay” on this album even though they sounded like Maurice Williams belonged to David Lindley and Rosemary Butler.
