There are still some great FREE experiences in North Carolina.
One is located in Bladen County, NC it is the Elwell’s Ferry located on the Cape Fear River connecting the communities of Kelly and Carver. Those experiences without a price tag often make me happy.
Operations began at the Elwell Ferry in 1905. Two brothers, John R. and Walter H. Russ, began the service which crosses the same point to this day. At the time, the Elwell Ferry was one of numerous river ferries in the state and the country operated by local residents to connect local farms and villages to each other. Looking to our past the Elwell Ferry is a living relic of early mode of transportation within North Carolina.
Today, the ferry is owned and operated by the NC Department of Transportation. The ferry holds a maximum of two passenger vehicles and is pulled across the river with cables.
It runs from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM in the Spring and Summer and from sunrise to sunset in the Winter and Fall.
Consider driving on either NC 87 or NC 53 between Wilmington NC and Fayetteville, NC. Then get off the highway and create a neat day trip with a ferry ride. Remember its a FREE North Carolina experience.
Happy doesn’t always have to have a price.
