I received a book from the Athletic Department at Flagler College called the Last Train to Paradise.
I finished reading it last night and if you ever have the opportunity to drive from Miami to Key West read this book.
The book is about Henry Flagler dream and accomplishment of connecting the island of Key West to the Florida mainland via train. To make that happen he needed SURVEYORS to determine the best route.
Many references to this railroad can be found online. Here is a great link complete with a map.
SURVEYORS have technical expertise to perform at least one of the following:
- to determine, measure and represent land
- to assemble and interpret land and geographically related information
- to use that information for the planning of the land, the sea and any structures that may be part of the survey
Surveying has occurred since humans built the first large structures. It was used on the Pyramids and at Stonehenge. It may be oversimplification but SURVEYORS determine the location of objects by measuring distance and angles.
Prior to establishing a goal is really a good idea to conduct some type of survey. The key is to understand what the goal will be. So just like Henry Flagler used SURVEYORS to help him build the Overseas Railroad we need to be our own SURVEYOR in plotting a course with any goals we establish. It will hopefully establish the best route to follow.
