In Ireland they have had to postpone an event in 2020 called the TRICOLOUR Celebration.
In Lumberton NC I have a friend named Kathy Geibert who probably knows all about the TRICOLOUR’s significance to Ireland. For those that don’t it involves an Irish American Patriot named Thomas Francis Meagher.
Meagher life was born in Ireland and at age 25 he was sentenced to serve life in prison for high treason. Part of his crime was presenting the TRICLOUR Flag at a speech in Dublin in 1848. The TRICLOUR did not become the official flag of Ireland until 1937.
Meagher was sent to Tanzania an island off the coast of Australia to live out the rest of his life or so thought the British Government. When he got to Van Diemen’s Land in Tanzania he actually got to accept a ‘ticket-of-leave’.
A Ticket of Leave was an early precursor to house arrest. With a ticket of leave the prisoner was responsible for his lodging and meals but could not leave the village he was assigned to. For Meagher he was assigned to Campbell Town. After some time he was moved down the road to Ross. From Ross he escaped Tanzania and two years later he wound up in New York City in 1852.
During the Civil War Meagher formed Company K of the New York 69th Infantry regiment. He eventually obtained the rank of Brigadier General. After the Civil War he became Secretary of the Territory of Montana and later Acting Governor.
In 1867 at the age of 44 he died when he fell from the steamer The Thompson into the Missouri River on July 1st.
When you see the TRIOLOURS of Ireland please know the man that presented that flag back in 1848 also led a colorful life.
