August 2026 several of us are going to take on the 30-Day Plugged in Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we will feature an item from home or office that requires being plugged into a source of electricity to operate. We will reflect on how it makes life easier. For Day 17 it is the BLANKET.

True confession I have never owned or slept with an Electric Blanket. Yet this device is another example of where electricity took an ordinary everyday item and transformed it. The inventor who gets credit for this device is George Crowley who received a patent for it in 1936.

The concept for this device to keep you warm on a cold night evolved from flying. Crowley the inventor had been involved in designing heated flight suits for pilots. He was a prolific inventor with more than 80 patents to his credit including one for painting and drying golf balls.

Unverified research estimated that some 10 million were sold in the US in 2024.
