March 2026 marks the 75th consecutive month that Jeff Neelon, Jaclyn Donovan, and I have completed a 30-Day Coach4aday Challenge. For this milestone month, we’ve chosen to focus on teaching. Each day for 30 days, we will share one lesson, principle, or insight gained from the previous 74 challenges—calling it the 30-Day Coach4aday Teach It Challenge. For each of us we believe that our own personal growth increases when we share it.

Today it is a quick tip on how to give meat or fish GRILL MARKS.

A month ago, I was eating at the Capitol City Chop House just outside of the RDU Airport. I was amazed as each steak was served to adjacent tables how each steak had a perfect grill mark.

“Teach It” 30 Day Challenge Guidelines

In past challenges, we invited others to join us, though participation has been limited. This month, the three of us will return to January 2020—the very beginning—and move forward to the present, reflecting along the way and sharing a life lesson or insight from any month with one another.

Here is how we will do it.

  1. Identify the principle, insight, or lesson from a previous 30-Day Challenge-identify the Challenge also.
  2. Teach that lesson to each of us.
  3. Share the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

Day 10-Grill Marks on Steaks & Fish

Many years ago, a friend told me there are two things you should never tell another man: how to do his job and how to grill. Today I’m breaking that rule by offering a small tip—one that might help you get perfect grill marks on the food coming off your barbecue.

In May 2022 our 30-Day Challenge was listening to a podcast daily.

Located a podcast with a fascinating name “Yum Yum with a Cajun Tongue“. It is hosted by April B and the site can be found on Facebook. The episode I listened to was only 5 minutes long. The title is Cooking Tip: Searing Meat

Podcast Takeaways

If you want to get the best sear or grill marks on fish or meat here are two tips.

  1. Let meat or fish come to room temp.
  2. Pat it dry.
