In August 2025, many of us are participating in the 30-Day Governors Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, we highlight one of the 2,300+ U.S. Governors—past or present—sharing insights into their achievements, controversies, or unique aspects of their careers. For today my choice is going to be on the OLDEST Governor ever to be seated.

Most would agree that bloggers appreciate topic suggestions and feedback from their readers. After I recently wrote about the only Governor who held the distinction of being both the youngest and oldest to serve, one of my loyal followers, Joe Butler, suggested a new challenge: Who was the Oldest Governor? He already knew the answer, but I didn’t—so today’s post is about Walter Goodland. At the time of his death, Goodland was the oldest individual to have served as governor of any state in the union. He was from Wisconsin and served as Governor from January 1943-until March 12, 1947. He died in office.

Governor-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a Governor in August.

  1. Record something about a particular US Governor. Make sure you include what US State and years that he/she served. Try to highlight an achievement, controversy, or some unique aspect of their career.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

August 27-Oldest Governor

Walter Goodland may have been an older governor, but he sure wasn’t meek. He epitomized a Governor who would not just go along. Goodland’s honesty and political independence were the source of both his controversial reputation among Republican Party leaders and his popularity with voters. During his first administration he tangled with the Republican-controlled legislature over finances, lobbying, and various wartime measures. The legislature overrode seventeen of Goodland’s vetoes in 24 hours, setting an all-time record of legislative defiance.
