In July 2025, many of us are taking part in the 30-Day “Tool” Coach4aday Challenge. Each day, the challenge encourages participants to share a tool that can help people with productivity, organization, and communication. Tools are essential in many occupations and hobbies. Today my choice is going to be the QUILL PEN which was used to write the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson.

Quill pens, made from bird feathers—most often goose—were the primary writing instrument in Europe from the 6th to the 19th century.

They also found their way to America in the late 17th century. They allowed for fine, controlled writing and were essential tools for scribes, scholars, and writers before the invention of the steel pen.

Tool-30 Day Challenge Guidelines

As with previous challenges, participants are encouraged to adapt the guidelines to fit their own circumstances. If you can, commit to sharing something about a tool in July.

  1. Record something about a particular tool. It can be physical or digital. It may also be something that has been replaced with advanced technology.
  2. Share with a challenge partner if you have one.
  3. Join the conversation by posting on social media with the hashtag #Coach4adayChallenge

July 4-Quill Pen

The Quill Pen revolutionized writing because of two things it allowed for longer periods of writing and spread the rate of literacy.

Here is a video on how the pen was constructed.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
