On Saturday March 28, 2020 a talented ARTIST passed away.
She was more than just an ARTIST she was a wife, mom, grandmother, and friend to many. She also created an iconic image for everyone connected to UNC Pembroke cherishes.
Her name was Gloria Tara Lowery.
Gloria Lowery created the logo for UNC Pembroke back in the early 1990’s under a mandate from then Chancellor Joe Oxendine (1989-1999).
Gloria also happens to be the mom to a great friend Wendy Lowery who is the Vice President of Advancement at Radford. She previously worked at UNC Pembroke in the same capacity. She loved her mom along with thousands of others.
UNC Pembroke’s athletic nickname is the Braves while its mascot is the red-tailed hawk. Athletic teams at UNC Pembroke have had the nickname Braves – a term that echoes the American Indian heritage – since 1946. The red-tailed hawk was added as a companion to the Brave in 1992 thanks to the artistic abilities of Gloria Lowery.
Her logo features a red tailed hawk sitting on the shoulder of a Brave. If you live near UNC Pembroke you will see that image everywhere. It has become a iconic symbol for the region and campus.
In 2013 as former UNCP Director of Athletics (1998-2012) and then Chief of Staff I made a recommendation to Chancellor Kyle R. Carter. That suggestion was that the university present to Gloria Lowery an honorary varsity letter. It was in recognition for the power that her iconic Brave logo had created for the university, community, and region. He was very gracious and said yes, He even deferred the presentation to former Chancellor Joe Oxendine.
The photo is not the best but the picture below shows Chancellor Emeritus Joe Oxendine presenting Gloria that Varsity Letter on the stage in the Givens Performing Arts Center.
After the ceremony was over I was thrilled to be in a photo with Gloria and Chancellor Oxendine that photo is below.
Gloria Lowery leaves behind many who adored her including her husband Wendell. The void she leaves behind is large.
In addition to Brave Logo she also part of designing the UNC Pembroke Ceremonial Mace.
Gloria Lowery left all who love UNC Pembroke a fantastic gift. One that gives all of us pride in the uniqueness of the place. She also left her family and friends unconditional love and kindness. That is the best legacy for any ARTIST.
