For the month of October 2024 several of us are participating in the 30-Day World Series Coach4aday Challenge. Each day we attempt to learn something about some aspect of the World Series. Today I am focusing on EXTRA INNING games played in the event.

This year marks the 120th playing of the World Series and there have been a remarkable number of games that have gone to extra innings. Beginning in 2020 after 9 innings an automatic runner was put on 2nd base in regular season games. That is not the case in post season play.

World Series 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in October 2024 write about the World Series
  2. Share at least one fact about the event or the participants.
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

In total there have been 65 World Series games go to extra inning since 1903.

Here are two interesting facts about World Series extra-inning games:

  1. Longest World Series Game by Innings – The longest game in World Series history, by innings, took place during Game 3 of the 2018 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox. It lasted 18 innings and took 7 hours and 20 minutes to complete, with the Dodgers winning 3-2 on a walk-off home run by Max Muncy.
  2. Most Extra-Inning Games in a Single World Series – The 1991 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves featured three extra-inning games, the most ever in a single World Series.
