For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with a Michigan teenager who at the age of 15 got dubbed MAGIC.

Fred Stabley Jr was a sportswriter for Lansing State Journal before having a 23-year career as Sports Information Director at Central Michigan University. While working for the Lansing newspaper in 1974 he covered an Everett HS basketball game who had a 15-year-old named Ervin Johnson.

Ervin delivered an extraordinary triple-double, recording 36 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 assists in a single game. Impressed by his incredible skills and playmaking ability, Stabley dubbed him “Magic,” a name that has stuck with him throughout his illustrious basketball career.

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

In 2022 Apple TV produced a 4-part series called “They Call Me Magic“. It was a look into the life of Ervin “Magic” Johnson.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career.
