Earlier this week I was channeling surfing and stumbled onto programming AMC was airing. The theme was about movies that had been remade and of course RECAST. They highlighted “A Star Is Born” which has been done 4 times beginning in 1937 and also in 1954, 1976, and 2018. February 11-My Gal Friday -Recast
In 1928 there was a hit on Broadway called The Front Page written by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur. It became a movie called by the same name in 1931. This film has actor Pat O’Brien as investigative reporter Hildy Johnson and Adolphe Menjou as his editor Walter Burns, the 1931 film is a classic buddy comedy.
In 1940 the film got remade under the name His Gal Friday. It got recast with Walter Burns (being played by Cary Grant) who will do anything to keep his star reporter, Hildy Johnson (played by Rosalind Russell), from leaving the paper. It went from a buddy comedy to a romantic comedy.
