For December 2023, several of us are participating in the “30-Day ANATOMY Coach4aday Challenge.” My choice today is the TIBIALIS Anterior.

During this challenge, the participants select a bone or muscle in the human body, providing details about its location and physiological significance.

How the Challenge Works

  1. Identify one anatomical part of the body.
  2. Describe what its purpose is.
  3. Describe where it is located.

Identify Your Choice

Wanted to learn about another muscle today so I choose the Tibialis Anterior. It is a very strong dorsiflexor.

Purpose

The tibialis anterior is a muscle located at the front of the lower leg, responsible for dorsiflexion of the foot, which involves lifting the foot and toes toward the shin. Its primary function is to control and stabilize the movement of the foot during activities such as walking and running, helping to prevent foot drop and ensuring proper clearance of the foot during the swing phase of gait.

Location

It is located on the front of the lower leg, running along the shin bone (tibia). You can find a diagram here
