#Warning January 21

On the morning of Sunday January 12, 2020 all kind of WARNING signals started emitting sounds from all the cell phones in our house.
The messages we received were Code Red Alert for a possible tornado in our area. The WARNINGS started at 1:05 a.m. By 1:35 a.m. the WARNING had been lifted.
We did not ignore the messages and took shelter in a closet under a stairwell. I spoke to many people on Sunday morning who ignored the WARNINGS. That happened for various reasons.
The tornado was real for our region but thankfully Lumberton NC was spared. The same thing cannot be said for Kershaw County SC where a tornado ripped thru North Central High School.
CodeRED Weather WARNINGS deliver advanced notification of severe weather events as soon as a bulletin is issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). The system delivers voice calls, text messages and emails to subscribed users within the direct path of the storm.
Technology and weather WARNINGS has a downsideTechnology and weather WARNINGS has a downside. Dr. Laura Myers, director and senior research scientist at the Center for Advanced Public Safety, study WARNINGS and how people react to them. She believes people have a tendency to not want to change plans or their behavior for weather unless they are fairly sure the weather is going to impact them. At 1:05 a.m. in the morning it is hard to make that determination.
Regardless of WARNINGS, some people wait until they see their life is in danger. As technology improves we all might want to consider taking weather warnings serious.
The challenge for anyone giving a WARNING is not to view it like the shepherd boy who cried wolf in the Aesop Fable
