If you are a planner, you have experienced the frustration of having an unplanned event steal your RYTHYM. Athletes, performers, and even regular people love being in a state of flow, tempo, or pattern. Having that is often called “Being in The Zone“. Describing it is best done by what takes place. You become hyper-focused, sometimes have a spiritual state of mind where anything is possible. When you arrive, it is place or moment in time you don’t want to exit.
Creating Rhythm
One fantastic source of how to create flow in our lives comes from the work of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He died a year ago (October 20, 2021) and was a renowned Psychologist who did much work on the mental state that creates productivity. Dedicating his professional life to discovering what makes humans happy.
It’s important to note that one can’t experience RHYTHM if distractions disrupt the experience (Nakamura et al., 2009). Thus, to experience this state, one has to stay away from the attention-robbers common in a modern fast-paced life. His work points out just how much capacity our brains have when it comes time to focus.
There is a bestselling book written by Csikszentmihalyi titled “Finding Flow“. Inside that book are many concepts that can enhance us experiencing the tempo of creativity. He provides a diagram shown below that demonstrates when it is likely to occur.
There is also a great TED Talk Mihaly did in 2004 that has been viewed over 7,000,000 times that explains a lot of his work and motivations.
