Today’s contribution to the 30-Day Election Trivia Coach4aday Challenge is on the elections of 1932.

The Presidential Elections of 1932 shifted political dominance in the United States from Republican to Democrat.

Great Depression and 1932 Election

Going into the 1932 election President Hoover and the Republicans were in power. The Great Depression had taken a toll on Herbert Hoover’s popularity and it seemed as if he could not provide answers. The Republican party was split as the rural Republicans struggled to support him. Hoover had an inability to relate to common people and his opponent could.

Franklin D. Roosevelt provided answers. He talked about a New Deal for Americans and proposed ideas that would expand the federal government’s role in the life of the citizen. The New Deal would give Americans hope. FDR related to Americans, and they wanted to trust him. He also spoke out against prohibition.

The simple takeaway was Hoover believed the economy would self-correct and Roosevelt believed any correction needed a plan. Americans voted for the approach of having a plan.
