During the month of July, I have taken up the 30-Day Curiosity Coach4aday Challenge, and today’s focus is on the topic of WICKER.
The mechanics of this challenge involve presenting a question and subsequently uncovering the optimal response.
July 3rd Curiosity Question
What is wicker and how is it made?
Tomorrow is the 4th of July which means all sorts of outdoor activities. Some of it will involve on sitting on various types of furniture all called wicker. I am just not sure what the term means or how it is constructed. Wicker is also a term that refers to baskets. Let’s go see if we can find some answers.

July 3rd Answer
Wicker refers to a weaving technique and the resulting material made from weaving flexible plant materials into a rigid structure. It is commonly used for furniture, baskets, and decorative items.
The process of making wicker involves several steps:
- Material selection: Traditionally, wicker is made using natural plant materials, such as willow, rattan, bamboo, reed, or seagrass. These materials are chosen for their flexibility and durability.
- Harvesting and preparation: The selected plant materials are harvested and prepared for weaving. This may involve soaking them in water to make them more pliable and easier to work with.
- Weaving: The weaving process begins by creating a framework or structure using thicker plant materials, such as willow branches or rattan poles. These form the main structure of the wicker item. The thinner, more flexible plant materials are then woven in a pattern around the framework to create the desired shape and design.
- Securing and finishing: As the weaving progresses, the plant materials are secured by tying or weaving the ends together. This helps maintain the structural integrity of the wicker item. Once the weaving is complete, any excess material is trimmed, and the edges are finished to create a neat and polished look.
Creating wicker furniture is a very deliberate and labor-intensive process—and it’s a process that requires a skilled wicker furniture maker from the very beginning.
It’s important to note that while traditional wicker is made from natural plant materials, modern wicker-like products can be made from synthetic materials, such as plastic or resin. These materials are often more durable and weather-resistant than natural wicker but aim to replicate its appearance and texture.
