Today’s #Coach4aday post is on the word VOTIVE.

It’s not uncommon for me to be stumped by my five-year-old granddaughter’s questions. This happened again two weeks ago, after church. Here is a photo of us leaving church getting ready to walk the 3 blocks to our house.

As we entered our home she stopped and asked me about the item below sitting on a small table in our hallway.

Quickly I told her that is a Votive Candle Holder. Then the stumper question came up. “Pops” what is votive? In the moment I didn’t have an adequate response. We moved on to another topic.

Defining a Votive

A votive is an offering or a gift that is made in fulfillment of a vow or a promise to a deity or a saint, typically in a religious or spiritual context. It is usually a small object like a candle Other examples can include a flower, or a figurine, that is offered as a token of devotion or gratitude.

In our home these candles are used to provide light during a storm or create a particular fragrance. Next time she asks I am going to be ready.
