#Value May 22

I owe my friend Ron Roach from Contempora Fabrics in Lumberton NC a big debt of gratitude. He loves to read about ideas related to leadership and life guidance. In 2018 he told me about a leader who puts out a daily blog that I immediately began to follow.

Ron and I at a Panthers Game

When Ron told me about this author/leader we were on vacation with five couples in Key West FL. That trip was without a doubt the best seven day vacation of my life. That week was great for a lot of reasons. The people, the weather, and the VALUE of what I experienced the entire week all exceeded expectations.

During that week in Key West, Ron turned me on to Seth Godin Blog. I now read it each morning and Seth makes me think about a lot of leadership and life concepts. One of those concepts was VALUE.

I think often of the trip to Key West especially during the quarantine. Not just the singular moment that Ron told me about the blog but the entire week. It is amazing how much VALUE you can put on shared experiences when they are difficult or impossible to navigate thanks to COVID 19.

2018 Trip to Key West

Why the trip was of VALUE was simple we all were invested in it. We planned for the trip together some 8 months in advance. There was a ton of research that went into finding the perfect house-kudos to Shannon Ransom. That house is our new standard for vacation VALUE.

I am realistic that I may never stay in house quite like the one we had in 2018. I am countering the realism with the optimistic approach there might be a chance. The house in Key West had a fantastic pool, two waterfalls, lazy river, and spa all outside inside a walled compound. It also had an elevated covered gazebo that was perfect for our 9:00 a.m. gentlemen only workday conferences. It had a gigantic kitchen that led to us preparing some great meals and snacks as a group.

The pandemic has reminded me that shared experiences with family and friends have great VALUE. I am combining that appreciation of VALUE with the hope I will do it again.

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
