You find cash in a jacket pocket that you forgot about and that becomes an UNEXPECTED surprise.

I think most of us would agree that the positive UNEXPECTED events do happen. We also know that negative UNEXPECTED moments occur also. They are the ones that test our meddle as mentally resilient leaders.

I play golf most mornings. Sometimes the golf ball takes an UNEXPECTED bounce and that forces me to react to what may be perceived an unfair bounce. I am not the only person who plays golf that has had an UNEXPECTED bad bounce. The video below shows a PGA professional experiencing the UNEXPECTED.

Nick Watney UNEXPECTED bounce

I often tell my golfing partners that we often don’t get what we deserve on every shot. The real challenge is reacting to that bad bounce with a good attitude.

Life is much more serious than a round of golf. Life is also difficult. But focusing on the feeling that we don’t deserve a bounce, break, or some situation life throws at us unexpectedly will not be of any help.

Mentally tough people do not assume, “the woe is me” role. They do not focus on finding someone to blame. They do not compare their miseries with those of others. They decide to deal with the adversity and challenges by believing that there is not “winning and losing” but “winning and learning”. They step up and hit the next shot.
