#Thoughts June 19

Today’s post is just a list of randomness I have observed over the past two weeks and THOUGHTS I have had.

Many of these insights are the result of viewing and listening to a TED Talk everyday as part of my 30 Day Challenge for June.

TED Talks make you think and that produced THOUGHTS.

Here are four of the best THOUGHTS I have experienced in June.

• People hate the truth because it shatters their illusions.
• You either pay the price for your greatness or you will pay the price of mediocrity.

• To be a great listener means you hear silence.
• One act of generosity can change many people.

I want to expound on the last THOUGHT about generosity with a story I was told.

Two weeks ago I mustered up the courage to ask a successful leader who was not born in the USA how he wound up in North Carolina. I was fearful he was going to be offended and just shut me down. Actually he got excited to share.

He told me the story of growing up in Latin America in the 1970’s and being rejected for a coveted education opportunity in Asia. At the time he was living in a country that was experiencing a political revolution. He found a way to escape his home country and get to Mexico.

He eventually make his way from Mexico to Houston TX where he found himself without a job and just $5.00 dollars to his name. He had a friend from his home country that lived in New York. He placed a collect phone call and told him of his plight of not being able to find work. His friend told him that work opportunities were plentiful in New York City. He sent him $600 via Western Union so he could fly there that week.

When he arrived in New York he immediately found a job in the restaurant industry and slowly build a reputation as a hard worker and an exceptional chef. He took the first $600 he earned and repaid his friend.

Over a ten year period of time business opportunities came his way in New York. A visit to a family relative in North Carolina led to him making a decision to relocate to NC in the late 1980’s. Today his restaurants are loved by many and he employs lots of people. That friend and $600 changed the course of his life and many others.

One Act of Generosity Can Change Many People

That is a THOUGHT we all should keep in mind.
