For the month of July 2024 several of us are going to take on a 30-Day Nickname Coach4aday Challenge. The simple concept is to share a nickname and tell a little about who it is associated with and why they got tagged with that moniker. Today I’m going with a university despite announcing a name change in 2024 is still sticking with the nickname THE W.

When I get the opportunity to do executive searches for my higher education clients, I often find myself learning something new about American Colleges and Universities. That was the case in June when one candidate had almost a 10-year career at a Mississippi State University that has the nickname The W.

That university announced in February 2024 that it was changing its name from Mississippi University for Women to Wynbridge State University. That announcement was met by tons of resistance and the proposed name change did not occur. The objective apparently is removing the word Women from the college’s name but keep The W.

Nickname 30-Day Challenge Guidelines

Like previous challenges there are no hard and fast rules to participate. There are a few suggested guidelines.

  1. Each day in July learn something or just appreciate a nickname associated with someone.
  2. Share that name with others
  3. If so inclined use the hash tag #Coach4adayChallenge on social media platforms

July 12th-The W

Simply put when Mississippi University for Women was founded in 1884 it was a college exclusively for white women. The W is stands for Women. For the last forty years it has been co-educational, but the current name probably doesn’t help market its intent to be inclusive on not only men but students of color.

Coach4aday

My purpose in life is to coach. I am a former collegiate basketball coach, director of athletics, and chief of staff. I worked at four NCAA Division I & II universities during my career. At each campus I learned timeless lessons on teamwork and leadership. Today my passion is coaching others on what it takes to lead, serve, and succeed.
