Often times when someone cuts themselves badly they ask will it need STITCHES.

STITCHES are a way doctors can close certain types of cuts. A doctor uses a special needle and thread to put in stitches. They sew the edges of the cut together and ties knots to hold the stitches in place. Doctors referred to STITCHES as sutures. Technology has caused this procedure to evolve.

What triggers the need for sutures? They are required if your cut is wide, jagged, or goes all the way through your skin. Sometimes you might need staples.

This link shows the basic of how a medical doctor ties each stitch. Today, most sutures are made of synthetic polymer fibers. In times past silk or the connective tissue from animals were used. Just like fishing line the materials used are rated for Tensile Strength. Tying surgical knots are referred to as ligatures.

Here is YouTube tutorial on how surgeons learn to tie off a STITCH using a square knot.
